Here at Sweeps & Ladders, we strongly believe in the importance of fire safety and education. When a family is prepared for an emergency situation, they have a much better chance of ensuring everyone stays safer and that proper authorities get on the case as quickly as possible. Review some tips below on how to best prevent fires and what to do should one occur in your home. Questions? Give us a call! We’re happy to help.
Have Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors Installed
This is a simple, quick, and easy step that is known for saving countless lives across the country. Smoke can spread quickly through a home, and smoke detectors often offer the first signal of trouble, especially if the homeowners and their families are asleep. The best thing to do is install multiple smoke detectors throughout the home, then have them interconnected, so that when one goes off, they all go off.
It’s also strongly advised to have carbon monoxide detectors installed throughout your property. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, making it impossible to detect without one of these devices, and it can be fatal if not treated promptly. Check the batteries on these detectors, along with the smoke detectors, monthly to ensure they are working properly.
Practice Fire Drills
Another step in ensuring your loved ones stay as safe as possible it to map out an escape plan and practice it at least once per month. It’s also advised to have back-up routes in place, should the first option be blocked by smoke and flames. Knowing how to get out and where to go once you’re out could make all the difference in saving someone’s life!
Along with this, let your family know to stay low, avoiding contact with smoke at all costs, and to check all doors and door knobs for heat before entering a room. Small steps like these and many others, are easy and important and make a huge impact on your family’s safety.
